Discovering MOSAC
Five years ago, Katherine Leader moved to the Sacramento Area looking for fun, engaging activities for her two young children, Edison and Abigail. As she drove past MOSAC, she noticed the large dome (the UC Davis Multiverse Theater), and her curiosity guided her to find this new science museum on Jibboom Street. Katherine was just in time to enroll her son Edison into one of MOSAC’s Camp Curiosity summer camps. This was just the beginning of a long relationship of learning and exploring MOSAC as a family.
MOSAC is for all ages
Katherine and her kids fell in love with the interactive exhibits. MOSAC Curiosity Collaborators guided Edison and Abigail through hands-on activities to learn about robotics and 3D printing. “Not only did my kids enjoy spending time in the museum, but I was having fun right alongside my children. I quickly realized this was a place for all ages to enjoy.”
A love of Planetarium Live Shows!
Even after a full day of camp, Edison begged his mom to continue exploring MOSAC. Both Edison and Abigail couldn’t wait to attend a live planetarium show. “The planetarium shows are incredible! Abigail was still little but not too young to enjoy the planetarium presentation Tour the Solar System. She developed a unique interest in the solar system. Although Abigail is not verbal, she can recognize all of the planets in all shapes and forms by lining them up in order. It’s her special power.”
Creativity and invention using real tools!
Katherine explains how the use of real tools in MOSAC’s Design Lab impacts his creativity outside of the museum. “At home, Edison uses his hot glue gun and some of his dad’s tools from the garage to do his ‘inventions’. The latest one is called ‘Alligator Jaws’. He also loves sharing his unique experience at MOSAC with his friends and teachers at school.”
Inspiring confidence
Katherine values MOSAC as a source of inspiration for younger generations. The museum provides more than a fun, hands-on learning experience. MOSAC instills life-long tools to encourage kids to accomplish challenging tasks and experience the reward of their work. “As his mom, seeing Edison develop the faith to believe he can do things, the confidence, the attitude to imagine, and stay curious is the most rewarding part of our experience at MOSAC.”
